The Skeptic is not a politician, being too much of a fact nerd for that, however, from observation I have learned some things about politics. Therefore I would expect Democrats to put away health care at this point – put it far, far, away- and focus on buying votes with a host of “stimulus” type legislation that throws money at Congressional districts that are deemed to be at risk in the next election.
The political reason that Democrats should put health care reform behind them is because repeated polling over many months indicates that about 55% – 60% of the American Public oppose the health care reform bill which has just been enacted. However, for some reason, the Administration has now decided that they need to take a stand on the bill, and again try to sell it to the Public and convince us of all the virtues contained in this legislation. Yes, apparently, the Administration is seizing this “opportunity” to once again procrastinate and put off any actual process of healing and Governing in favor of doing the one thing they love most, and the only thing they actually know how to do well – campaign!!!
I cannot envision that true political pros would counsel the President to take this course of action. Rather, I think this decision springs from Mr. Obama’s own overweening egotism – his inability to conceive that he is wrong, and his natural instinct that any and all opposition to his ideas is based on ignorance on the part of the American Public as to their beauty and brilliance. Of course, it also betrays his lack of talent (and perhaps boredom) regarding actual governing, and his need to be a “transformative” rather than a uniting figure. Mr. Obama would evidently rather preach to his 35% choir than be the President of all of the American People. And, of course, it also illustrates the insularity of his entourage, and their apparent isolation from current American political discourse.
As a single issue partisan opposing Government-mandated health care, I had planned to close down this blog once the bill had been voted on. Now, due to the President’s inability to let this issue go, I am encouraged to continue. Think of it! – Over the last year, Mr. Obama’s artless (and factless) charge ‘forward’ on this issue has managed to lose the health care debate over, and over, and over again in the Court of Public Opinion, and to fritter away his own popularity in the process!! To those of us who oppose him, Mr. Obama’s incredible egotism in choosing to continue this process is truly “The Gift That Keeps on Giving.” We have been soundly besting him for a whole year on this issue … and now he wants a rematch!!?? Sure! To paraphrase Mr. T’s Clubber Lang in “Rocky 2,” speaking about his opponent’s quest for a rematch – “We don’t accept the President’s challenge because the President is no challenge, but, if he wants, we will be glad to beat up on him some more.”
Of course, in view of the Administration’s state-of-the-art CG Victimization Effects Team (Winner, “Best Virtual Strawman” – 2009 for “The Evil Insurance Industry”, and the team behind the currently running masterpiece “The Angry Teabagger”), I need to make the disclaimer that we only intend to intellectually “beat up on” the President’s pathetic polemic, not to do him physical harm. Oh, and I need to also ask you readers, if any, also not to be incited to any rash acts by my inflamed rhetoric – lol. What a crock this whole Democratic postgame show is! The Country is watching while the Democrats totally overplay their victim status and reveal it for the fake that it is. These new “strategies” – the continued sales pitch and the racist/violence thing – is political amateur hour stuff, and it will cost the Party points in the November elections!!
